When there is a retinal tear or hole within lattice it is commonly treated by laser or cryotherapy. The cornea has five layers: Epithelium: the outermost, protective layer of the cornea. They progress slowly and run in families. Most corneal dystrophies affect both eyes. With corneal dystrophies, abnormal material builds up in the cornea (the clear, front window of the eye). The area is much more predisposed to a torn retina. Corneal dystrophies are a group of rare genetic eye disorders. which is attached to the edges of the lattice, may tug on it and cause a horseshoe tear in the retina. The retina is typically thinner within areas of lattice. However, in rare cases it can lead to a retinal tear or detachment, which are very serious conditions that require prompt attention from an ophthalmologist or retina specialist. Risk factors Lattice degeneration itself does not cause symptoms. Lattice appears as a cigar shaped area of whitening and pigment clumping in the anterior peripheral retinal. There is no prevention or cure for lattice degeneration. If a patient has lattice in one eye there is 50% chance that it will be in the other as well. It is condition where the peripheral retina develops small holes and thin spots. Laser surgery can repair a retinal tear or hole. Treatment of retinal disease may be complex and sometimes urgent. Your doctor will work with you to determine the best treatment. The thinning can be severe enough that a retinal hole can develop. Lattice Degeneration of the retina occurs in about 6-8 of the population. In many cases, damage that has already occurred cant be reversed, making early detection important. Lattice degeneration is a risk factor for retinal detachments especially in nearsighted eyes and in eyes that have previously had surgery. Some people have areas of thinning in the peripheral retina, known as lattice degeneration. Lattice is typically asymptomatic but i soften a precursor to retinal hole formation and/or a retinal detachment. Lattice degeneration is an eye disease that causes the peripheral retina to become atrophic in a lattice pattern. Subclinical RD was seen in 10 (6.7) of 150 eyes with atrophic holes, involving 9 (7.5) of 120 patients, and had a much less serious prognosis than clinical. During a dilated eye examination the eye doctor will use an indirect ophthalmoscope to examine the peripheral retina and look for changes that may predispose the patients to retinal problems that are undetected by patients. While this is not a common occurrence, it is seen in 6-8% of the population. Lattice degeneration is a degenerative change in the peripheral retina. Monovision with Monofocal Lens Implants.
